What do Parents Need to Know When Choosing a Day Home?

What is a Private Day Home?

A day home, sometimes referred to as private babysitting, is a private residence that independently provides care for children. These are allowed to have up to 6 children, as well as the operator's children, to be cared for in a private babysitting arrangement. Parents are responsible for the screening and monitoring of private caregivers. No subsidy is available in private babysitting situations.

When choosing a private care arrangement, parents should be allowed to complete a safety check of the home. This includes viewing all rooms in the prospective home and the outdoor play area.

Parents are encouraged to request both a criminal record check and an Intervention Check for all individuals over the age of 18 years residing in the home they are placing their children. The parent should be permitted to enter the home at drop-off and pick-up times.

Why Choose a Day Home?

There are a lot of options when it comes to finding care for your child. Day homes are an excellent choice!

Because they care for fewer children than daycares do, your child will be able to receive the individual care and attention they need and deserve. You know exactly who will be with your child at all times, and your child will appreciate the stability and home-like comfort that a day home can provide. Parents enjoy having a more one-on-one relationship with their childcare provider, enabling them to develop a rapport without the constant changeover of staff common in daycares. Day homes are also often a more affordable option than other forms of childcare.

How do I Select a Day Home?

When you are looking for child care, it is important to take your time. Make a list of questions that you would like answered. The more questions you ask, the more informed you will be. This will help you feel more comfortable with your decision. Communication is vital throughout the entire duration of care. If you have questions, comments or suggestions, please feel free to talk about them with your care provider. We value your opinion! We want you and your child to feel safe and happy.

Examples of interview questions you should ask your potential child care providers:

What kind of activities and/or daily schedules will my child be engaged in?

What kind of food will be provided? Will I need to provide my own food?

Is your Infant and Child First Aid & CPR training up to date?

Who else will be around my child?

What other children will be here?

How many other children will you be taking care of?

Will my child have someone to play with?

What are your methods of discipline?

I would never send my child if they were sick. Will my child be exposed to sick children?

Will you be driving my child anywhere?

Do all of your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors work?
